Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (Philadelphia), there lived a little girl (in a working-class suburb). She went to school in 6th grade and had a scoliosis screening. She came home with the little pink piece of paper that said, "Slight scoliosis, no follow-up required." Mom & Dad read the note and tossed it into the trash, never giving it another thought. After all, no follow-up required meant just that.
Years went by and now the little girl was in high school. She began to develop significant health challenges that were respiratory and digestive in nature, more specifically, bronchitis and acid reflux. By the time she was ready to go to college, she was sent off with a bag of drugs (really they were samples that the pharmaceutical reps would bring into her mom's office), mostly antibiotics. The instructions were to take one and see if she improved and if not, take the next one on the list.
As a pre-med student in college, sickness was viewed as the reason for medicine. The students were studying for entry into a profession whose entire purpose was to care for people when they got sick. The girl had always envisioned herself as a doctor who would help people stay healthy. Just before graduation, it was clear to her that medicine was not the field in which she wanted to spend the rest of her life. A difficult decision was made. After rigorous testing, application fees and essay writing, she decided to postpone graduate school. She thought she would take a year and really explore her options.
Meanwhile, the college years passed with the episodes of bronchitis up to 8-9 times per year and by graduation, the acid reflux was a daily occurrence. The girl spent the year after graduation working with a group of optometrists and ophthalmologists and thought that may the field for her. Still undecided, she thought a change would do her good. She moved to Florida for the summer. In August of that year, she woke up one morning with horrific neck pain. Her drive to work was a dangerous one since she couldn't even turn her head in either direction because the pain was so severe. She got to work and a co-worker suggested that she visit his chiropractor. The words that came out of her mouth were, "No way! I would NEVER go see a chiropractor!" She was eating those words for lunch! She begged for the chiropractor's number by lunchtime and had an appointment that day. Thus began her education about chiropractic and the twisted journey that lie ahead in her search for better health.
For nearly 3 months, the girl kept her chiropractic appointments. Her neck pain was gone after the first 2 weeks. She continued to follow the chiropractor's recommendations and continued with her care plan. She visited home for Christmas that year and her mom handed her a giant bag of sample meds again. It hit her like a ton of bricks...she didn't need them. She had spent 10 years taking antibiotics and for the first time that she can really recall, she didn't need them. How exciting that day was!! What she had learned through the education at her chiropractor's office is that the Power that made your body heals your body! When you have no interference in your nervous system, your body is able to function at a much higher level.
Perhaps by now you have figured out that the little girl in the story is actually me, Dr. Lynne. I spent a long time trying to maintain health with an immune system weakened by antibiotics and an improperly functioning nervous system, crippled with interference. Once subluxations were detected and corrected in my spine, my nervous system began to function properly. It was like a light that had been dimmed for so long was suddenly bright again. My body began to function at a higher level and since that time, almost 15 years ago, I have had no need for drugs of any kind.
Take a minute to read about some of the positive experiences that my patients have had over the years. Read their stories...
